About Mel Blatt

Mel Blatt was born in Brooklyn, New York. By the time she was fourteen she lived in four different states. One constant in her life was her art and the comfort she found in brushes, canvas and paint. When it was time to choose a college she decided to study her second love, film. She attended New York University, Tisch School of the Arts and majored in Film/TV with a minor in studio arts. It was the atmosphere of moviemaking that influenced her figurative pieces. "I wanted to capture and create a mood, a feeling, a moment in time, basically a frame cut from the film, a piece of the story". She showed at local galleries in Minneapolis and started exploring art in a functional way. In 1999 she created bags made from canvas, each were designed with a unique shape, style and pattern. She presented this to Neiman Marcus and had two successful events with Mel Blatt handbags. Presently, Mel has been working on what is revealed and what is concealed. Using stripes to explore foreground and background, the subject has a floating effect but at the same time is gently sustained in space. This dialogue of what is and isn't seen is a theme Mel is examining both in her work and life.
